Mooninites Create Chaos

mooninites.jpgI am not a fan nor viewer of Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim and Aqua Teen Hunger Force cult cartoon, but I do know that the Mooninites are pixelated 2D characters. In Boston and nine other cities, lite-brite panels with images of these characters were attached to bridges and overpasses. These devices were complete with circuit boards, wires, and batteries. So, it created a scare when almost a dozen of these devices were found all over the city. Highways were shut down and so were subway stations. They’ve been up for two weeks and only now do they cause a stir.

It’s called guerilla marketing and was ordered by Turner Broadcasting. The people they hired to hang these devices were hired by a marketing company and then arrested after this whole ordeal. City officials said $750,000 dollars were spent on police and bomb squads. Turner apologized that the marketing campaign was mistakely thought to pose danger. Blogs and news outlets have been all over this story for the past day or two. Boston’s Mayor Tom Menino and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick are fuming.

Still, some feel this campaign is a clever one. After all, Turner got the attention, though maybe not in the way they desired. YouTube has a video of the people hanging the objects around Boston. Bostonist.com has had lots of posts covering the opinion and reaction. The nine other cities in which these devices were placed had no reaction like this.
